Plays to Look out for in 2012

I'm a self confessed theatre freak.  I'm mad about plays and I have said goodbyes to movies so I could save on entertainment expense so I could keep up with watching live acts.  So when I found this article at spot.ph, I'm quite excited.


This 2012 is another year of great acts and quality productions.  So fill in your calendar and save on some moolah for a spectacular show!


The Sound of Music

Bakit Wala Nang Nagtatagpo si Philcoa Oberpas? tells the story of a man and a woman who decide to meet at the Philcoa overpass after months of flirting online, as their story intertwines with other characters. In Doc Resureccion: Gagamutin Ang Bayan, a well-meaning doctor runs for Mayor only to find out that the community he wanted to help desires a different path for itself. In Maliw, a family celebrates the 30th birthday of their eldest daughter who disappeared five years ago as her mother tries to close a chapter that has yet to be written. Isang Araw Sa Karnabal is about two former activists, both with missing loved ones, meeting again after a long time and attempting to mend broken ties.

Synopsis: The long-running Ateneo-La Salle rivalry gets a melodic twist. Set in 1968 when Ateneo and La Salle were still part of the NCAA with other schools such as Letran and San Beda, the story revolves around two families—one blue-blooded (Atenean) and one green-blooded (La Sallian). The main stars are two young men—both star basketball players of their respective schools—vying for the affections of a beautiful coed from a nearby all-girls school, Maryknoll. To make the friendly rivalry a bit more complicated, the boys—Quito Valencia and Tommy Basilio—are first cousins and best friends.

Haring Lear is the story of a king whose rash judgment, firm faith in filial piety, violence and blindness is the cause of his kingdom's destruction, and eventually his own undoing. It features an all-male cast, including the daughters of Haring Lear portrayed my male thespians.

There's Schroeder, an admirer of Beethoven and Charlie's second best friend next to Linus. There's Snoopy, Charlie Brown's wisecracking yet lovable dog. There's Linus, the blanket-toting daydreamer. Last but not the least, there's Sally, Charlie's sister who battles getting a D in school while crushing on Linus.

The only thing is, as soon as they get to York, they find out that the lady's long-lost relatives are nieces, not nephews! One disastrous decision leads to another in this hilarious story of two broke actors passing themselves off as women in order to scam an old lady for her wealth.

Frank Baum's classic children's novel comes to life in this adventurous musical starring our favorite character Dorothy, a young Kansas farm girl who is whisked away by a tornado to the magical land of Oz, where she looks for the mighty Wizard who has the power to send her home. In her quest she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodsman and a Cowardly Lion who help her avoid the clutches of the Wicked Witch Of The West in this adventurous journey.

A friendly note: This musical is not based on the famous MGM film starring Judy Garland, and will not include songs from the movie.

Synopsis: “Camp Rock: The Musical” is a stage adaptation of the Disney Channel hits Camp Rock (2008) and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010), but focuses on the storyline of Camp Rock 2, where Mitchie gets her team of Camp Rockers to get into shape to battle the flashy new Camp Star across the lake in an ultimate musical showdown. This Repertory adaptation features four songs from Camp Rock and 10 songs from Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.
